The path to living a Repurposed retirement actually starts well before you retire. It begins with reimagining what work means to you and having a healthy relationship with your job. This combination will propel and prepare you for a purposeful retirement. Here are three steps for reimagining your work and subsequent retirement.
Know your definition of "meaningful work"
It's important to identify the reason you go to work on a deeper level. However you define "meaningful work", it needs to consider the people-impact you are having. Are your God-given talents, skills and abilities being used to make this impact?
Start reevaluating your work while working
Stop and do a self-check. Are you merely counting down the months and years until you can finally stop working. Or, is your job a healthy outlet for you to utilize your skills, talents and abilities while maintaining consistency with your value system.
Consider a job change before retirement
If your job is not fulfilling and you're not doing meaningful work, perhaps, it's time to consider making a change. Few things bother me more than hearing people say, "Well, I don't like my job. So, I might as well retire." Instead, find a new career path. We have coached people through late-season career changes - many times for a pay-cut extending the time until retirement. However, they are much happier while working and end up having much smoother transitions into retirement.
At Taatjes Financial Group we take pride that we not only help clients plan financially for retirement, but coach and guide them into a retirement of purpose and fulfillment.
